Academic Banquet
Each year, students in grades 10, 11 and 12 with a cumulative GPA of 3.70 or higher are honored at the Academic Banquet.
Parents and family members are invited to attend the event where students in each grade level are recognized with a medal. A speaker is invited each year to provide a message of inspiration to students after a meal hosted by the Canton Public Schools K-12 Foundation and sponsored by our generous donors. |
Canton's Academic Banquet History
In 1958, the academic banquet was thought to be an educational first, not only in the city of Canton or in the State of South Dakota, but perhaps in the entire nation. At the time, Canton's Superintendent of Schools, Clarion White, felt it important to honor students with high academic achievement, thus the "Honor Roll Banquet" was conceived. The first banquet was held in January 1958, honoring 84 honor roll students in grades 6-12 at a banquet typically reserved for a championship football or basketball team. The school sponsored banquet continued each year from 1958 through 2001, when it was discontinued due to budgetary cuts. In 2008, the Canton Public Schools K-12 Foundation was formed and made it a mission to reinstate the academic banquet. By 2013, the foundation was in a financial position to host the banquet, which has now continued each year.
